How to use a concrete demo saw

Concrete Demolition Saws have various use cases. They can be used to make penetrations in concrete, widen openings of doorways, cut concrete kerbs or make openings in a brick wall.

Step 1 – Get to know the Demolition Saw

These demolition saw machines are very powerful and can be seriously dangerous in the wrong hands. Make sure to accustom yourself to all the parts of the machine by reading the user manual very carefully. We would suggest doing a course on the correct and safest use of the machine, most of the time the manufacturer would provide training courses. We would strongly suggest getting a one-on-one course with a trained professional before attempting to operate these machines.

Step 2 – Prepare the Demolition Saw

When carrying out any kind of work with a demolition saw it is always good practice to carry out a safety check of the machine before you begin to operate it. Ensure the diamond blade is correctly installed and tightened. Make sure you have a water supply attached to the demo saw. This ensures the diamonds on the blade are kept cool and will help to prolong the life of the blade.

Step 3 – Use the Correct Diamond Blade

One of the most important parts of using a concrete demolition saw is ensuring you are using the correct diamond blade for the task you are looking to carry out. Different blades have different applications.

Types of Diamond Blades:

  • Continuous Rim
  • Segmented Rim
  • Electroplated Rim

Continuous Rim – The Continuous Rim diamond blades are best for a fine finish and are best suited for cutting and mitering ceramic tiles or other stone coating materials. They are best suited for cutting anything 25mm or less in thickness.

Segmented Rim – Segmented Rim diamond blades are the fastest cutting blades. They are designed to cut through all kinds of materials at maximum speeds as they are optimized for cooling.

Electroplated Rim – These special Electroplated Rim diamond blades are specifically designed to cause less vibration during cutting. They are mainly suited for those materials that have a high risk of breaking like marble.

Step 4 – Inspect the diamonds on the blade before cutting

Always inspect your diamond blade carefully before performing a new cut. It is important that you have relatively fresh diamonds on the blade before you begin to cut. This is important, as it is the diamonds that actually cut through the material for you. If you have blunt diamonds that are very worn then you will find it is taking longer to make the cut and having to put more pressure on the demolition saw. It is not advised to force a blade with worn diamonds to make a cut as you will overheat the blade and it could snap and severely injure you or others around you.

Step 5 – Water Supply

One of the most integral parts of any Concrete Demo Saw is the water supply. All modern demo saws will have a water intake where you can attach a hose or a water pump supply. This will supply water directly to the blade and help to cool the diamonds during the cut. You only need a small trickle of water going to the blade while cutting. The problem with having the water supply to the demo saw is it will mix with the concrete or brick dust created by the saw and form a slurry-like substance.

Step 5 – Personal Protective Equipment

Last but not least the single most important safety measure to take when operating a concrete demolition saw is wearing appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). We suggest you wear all PPE available especially Safety Boots, Safety Glasses, Ear Protection, a Face Mask, and Hard Hat. Apart from all this safety protection we also suggest wearing long sleeve shirts and long pants, as it can get very messy with the slurry created by the saw.
