Safety Personnel
Concrete cutting crews are usually small and often working alone in someone else's building, which makes the safety structure different from a big demolition site. The person holding the saw is frequently the person making the call.
So the tickets sit with the people doing the work. Confined space, working at heights, high risk work licences and plant tickets are held by the operators, and our supervisors are people who have run a saw themselves rather than administrators.
Silica health monitoring is part of that structure and not an optional extra. This trade has a long history of harm that only shows up decades later, and the controls only work if somebody is checking that they are in place on every job rather than on the induction form.
The authority to stop a cut
Which matters more here than on most sites
Any of our operators can stop. If the scan does not match the drawings, if a service cannot be proven dead, if the access is not safe or if somebody has asked for a cut that does not look right, the job stops and the supervisor comes out. On post tension work in particular, the pressure to just get on with it is exactly the pressure that has to be resisted.
