One crew for the cut and the seal

A slab moves. If the joints are not cut where the engineer wants them, the slab picks its own line and cracks. If the sealant in a trafficked joint fails, the arris breaks down under every forklift wheel. We cut new joints to the cut plan and we re-seal failed joints on existing floors, so one contractor answers for the line, the depth and the seal.

What we cut and seal on the Gold Coast

  • Expansion and control joint cutting in ground slabs, pavements, hardstands and roads, to the depth and layout on the cut plan.
  • Saw cuts for new pours, so the fresh slab cracks at the joint and nowhere else.
  • Joint cuts for slab section removal, and road and floor sawing from 25 to 500 mm.
  • Joint repair and re-sealing on trafficked slabs: arris and edge breakdown, spalled joints and failed sealant.

How the work runs

  1. Scope from the cut plan, the road authority's specification or a joint schedule and photos: thickness, joint depth and width, what is under the slab, access and hours.
  2. SWMS issued before the start and a supervisor on site for the shift, with inspection records written for the engineer's or the road authority's review. Where services or a suspended slab are possible, we scan first.
  3. Joint lines set out from the cut plan and checked with your engineer or site supervisor before the blade goes down.
  4. Wet cut with water on the blade for dust and silica control, depth set to the cut plan. Slurry bunded and vacuumed as the cut runs and removed from site. Nothing goes into a drain, onto the track or into a waterway.
  5. On a re-seal, the failed sealant is cut out and the joint faces are cleaned back to sound concrete. Spalled arrises are repaired to the specification first.
  6. New sealant or filler installed to the manufacturer's instructions and the engineer's or facility manager's specification. Cure and return to traffic follow the product and the engineer's or manufacturer's requirement.
  7. Night possessions and staged works where the site requires it, so a warehouse keeps trading.

What the engineer specifies and what we do

Your engineer or designer sets the joint positions, depth and width, or the road authority's specification does. The sealant or filler is named by the engineer or the facility manager who owns the floor. We cut and seal to those documents and hold for inspection where asked. We do not supply engineering, we do not lay out joints and we do not choose the product. Inductions, insurances and paperwork go into your systems the way a head contractor expects.

Who books this work

Builders and concreters who need joints cut in a new pour. Civil contractors, councils and road authorities cutting joints in pavements and roads. Facility managers with joints breaking down under forklift traffic in a warehouse, cold store, factory or hardstand. Head contractors taking a slab section out. Rail operators with a channel to cut in a possession.

Where we work on the Gold Coast

Expansion joint cutting and re-sealing on the Gold Coast covers the Yatala, Ormeau, Stapylton and Molendinar industrial estates and the warehouse floors in them, the Burleigh Heads and Currumbin industrial areas, new pours in the tilt panel sheds along the M1 from Yatala to Tugun, the Gold Coast Highway and Southport Nerang Road, the Gold Coast rail line and the light rail corridor, Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach car park slabs and loading docks, Coomera, Robina and Coolangatta, and the City of Gold Coast council area.

The Gold Coast is under an hour from our Slacks Creek base, so a job in two visits, cut first and re-seal later, is easy to staff.

We do not have a Queensland joint cutting or joint sealing job on the site. Our joint and channel cutting record is in New South Wales. A 30 mm movement joint cut through 1.2 m thick columns at Mascot with a wall saw, so the building could expand and contract. A channel cut along both platform edges at Wynyard Station for Sydney Trains, over 240 lineal metres across two weekend possessions, so a gap filler could be installed by others. 190 lineal metres of industrial slab at Erskine Park road sawn at 225 mm for removal. A 120 square metre slab at Balmain for Lloyd Group marked out and sawn into 2 m squares with a sandbag bund holding the slurry. To be plain: the named jobs on the site are joint and channel cutting. The joint repair and re-sealing work sits inside our concrete maintenance service and does not have a published case study yet. References on request. Queensland references are available on request.

Frequently asked

Do you cut or seal joints for homeowners on the Gold Coast?

No. We do not cut or seal joints in driveways, paths or slabs for homeowners. Commercial, industrial, civil and infrastructure work only.

Who decides where the joints go and what goes in them?

Your engineer or designer sets the joint positions, depth and width on the cut plan, or the road authority's specification does. The sealant or filler is chosen by the engineer or facility manager who specifies the repair. We cut and seal to those documents, nothing more.

How soon can forklifts run over a re-sealed joint?

It depends on the product and the engineer's or manufacturer's requirement. We confirm it before the crew starts so the floor can be staged around it.

Do you install bridge expansion joint assemblies or armoured joints?

No. We cut expansion and control joints in concrete and re-seal joints in trafficked slabs. We do not install bridge expansion joint assemblies, armoured joints or proprietary expansion joint systems.

Other areas we cover

Joint cutting and sealing also in Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast. Hub: concrete cutting. Related on the Gold Coast: road sawing and concrete maintenance for spalls, cracks and floor repairs around the joints.
