Straight, deep and to the line

A road saw is the right tool when the cut is long, straight and deep: a service trench across a road, the edge of a pavement slab coming out, a kerb line that has to go, or a channel along a platform edge. You get a clean edge for the excavator or the next pour, cut to the line your engineer or the road authority drew.

What we cut in Newcastle

  • Road sawing of roads, pavements, kerb and gutter and rail corridors from 25 to 500 mm, in concrete or asphalt, petrol or electric saws to suit the site.
  • Floor and slab sawing for service trenches: plumbing, electrical and comms runs through slabs on ground and depot pavements.
  • Kerb, channel and median removal cuts, so the old profile lifts out clean.
  • Expansion and control joint cutting, and saw cuts for new pours.
  • Full depth pavement cutting and slab sections sized for the excavator to lift.

How the work runs

  1. Scope from the drawings, photos or a marked up plan: thickness, reinforcement, what is under or beside the cut, access, power and hours.
  2. Where an engineer's cut plan or a road authority specification exists, we work to it and our SWMS and inspection records are written for that review.
  3. SWMS issued before the start and a supervisor on site for the shift. Where services or a suspended slab are possible, we scan first and mark what is there.
  4. Cut lines and section sizes marked out to suit the excavator, and everything staged before the lane closes: saws fuelled and bladed, spare blades, removal plant positioned, lighting set, spoil route agreed.
  5. Wet cut with water on the blade for dust and silica control, depth set to the slab or pavement.
  6. Slurry bunded and vacuumed as the cut runs, collected and removed from site. Nothing goes into a drain, onto the track or into a waterway.
  7. Cut sections lifted or broken out, the area cleaned and handed back for reinstatement or the next trade.

Traffic control, night possessions and staged works

Most road sawing in Newcastle happens at night, in a weekend possession or in a staged lane closure, because that is when the road or the corridor can be given up. We work to your traffic management plan rather than around it, and our supervisor talks to your traffic crew as a matter of course. If you would rather have one contract, we can arrange a traffic management contractor as part of the package. On rail corridors and depots the crew is RIW inducted and works alongside your possession and protection teams, with slurry and dust kept off the track and away from signalling. Perfect Concrete Care is part of Perfect Group, so inductions, insurances and site paperwork go into your systems the way a head contractor expects.

Who books this work

Civil and head contractors on road, rail and infrastructure packages. Councils, road authorities and the contractors working for them. Utilities, rail operators and their subcontractors. Plumbers and electricians running service trenches on commercial jobs. Builders needing a slab section out or joints cut in a new pour. Facility managers with a hardstand or depot pavement to repair.

Where we work in Newcastle

Road, kerb, asphalt and trench sawing in Newcastle covers the Pacific Highway and the Newcastle Inner City Bypass, the M1 at Beresfield and the Hunter Expressway, the Port of Newcastle and Kooragang Island, the Hunter rail line and the Newcastle Interchange, the industrial estates at Beresfield, Thornton, Tomago and Cardiff, the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Port Stephens and Cessnock council areas, and the Central Coast at Gosford, Tuggerah, Wyong and the Somersby industrial estate on the way up.

Hunter and Central Coast jobs run as a block from our Marrickville base: the crew mobilises once with the saws, blades and vacuums and stays for the programme.

To be plain, the road sawing on our books is in Sydney and the Illawarra rather than Newcastle itself. It includes a channel cut along both platform edges at Wynyard Station for Sydney Trains, 240 lineal metres over two weekend possessions, with no slurry allowed onto the track, road sawing around a damaged bollard at the Sydney Trains Auburn Maintenance Centre for Abergeldie and Downer, wet vacuumed so no slurry reached the drains, highway road sawing on the Albion Park Rail Bypass for Fulton Hogan and Transport for NSW, in narrow windows on a partly closed national highway and 190 lineal metres of industrial slab at Erskine Park sawn at 225 mm for removal. The same crew, saws and method travel to Newcastle.

Frequently asked

Do you cut driveways or paths for homeowners in Newcastle?

No. We do not cut driveways or paths for homeowners, and we do not hire out road saws or blades. Commercial, civil and infrastructure work only.

Do you provide traffic control?

We work under your traffic management plan and your traffic crew. If you want one contract we can arrange a traffic management contractor as part of the package. Our operators are saw operators, not traffic controllers.

How deep can a road saw cut?

From 25 to 500 mm, in concrete or asphalt. Deeper than that is referred to our sister company DeconCut.

Can you cut at night or in a rail possession?

Yes. Night lane closures, weekend possessions and staged works are normal. Rail corridor and depot work is done by RIW inducted crews.
